US Mint’s First Ever Gold $100 Coin Close to Selling Out

The world famous United States Mint released its first ever solid gold $100 denomination coin in July 2015. So highly desirable was this new historic issue that it proved to be one of the mint’s fastest ever selling coins, with initial stock selling out within hours of its release.

Struck in 1 ounce of .9999 fine gold, this new $100 coin is among the purest in the world and a truly innovative issue from The US Mint. It features both a new obverse and reverse design, each depicting contemporary versions of two of the most famous emblems of America – the Bald Eagle and the Lady Liberty. The use of modern technology allows the coins to be produced in high relief, a finish which raises the image above the outer edge, maximising the detail of the designs.

The reverse image, created by award winning coin designer, Paul C. Balin, depicts the Bald Eagle in mid-flight clutching an olive branch, a symbol of peace, freedom and strength. The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of America for over 230 years and is traditionally depicted with a quiver of arrows in the bird’s claws, a motif which has not been included on this modern depiction. Interestingly, this design was initially submitted for another coin altogether but was rejected before being put forward to appear on the new $100 coin.

Designed by renowned artist and coin designer, Justin Kunz, the obverse features a modern depiction of the Lady Liberty, holding the flaming torch of enlightenment in one hand and the American flag in the other. The artist’s deliberate departure from the traditional ancient Greek style portrait of Liberty is intended to reflect the values and diversities of today’s society.

America’s first ever gold coin with a $100 denomination was one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year, but few could have predicted just how fast it would sell. With its beautiful new contemporary design and precious metal content, The US Mint are sure to sell out the 50,000 edition limit.
