Queen Victoria Jubilee Head Gold Sovereign

FIRST EVER portrait change during the reign of Queen Victoria

  • Limited edition presentation of just 795
  • The first time Victoria’s effigy had changed in fifty years
  • Issued to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria

To mark the 50th anniversary of her reign, a new Golden Jubilee effigy of Queen Victoria by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm was introduced in 1887 and struck by The Royal Mint. The new design depicted a more mature monarch. This was the first ever change of portrait since becoming queen fifty years previously and it was to remain on all Victoria’s coinage for the next seven years. Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design remained on the reverse.
