Queen Victoria Young Head with George and Dragon reverse
Own a genuine Sovereign issued during the reign of a famous monarch
Struck by The Royal Mint, the second Sovereign of Queen Victoria’s reign was issued from 1871 and saw the return of Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless portrayal of St George slaying the dragon on the reverse. The ‘young head’ portrait by William Wyon continued to appear on the obverse just as it had done on the previous ‘Shield’ Sovereign. Initially, the two Sovereigns were issued together but from 1875 until the end of Victoria’s reign in 1901 only the George and dragon design appeared on the Sovereign.
