The George IV ‘Bare’ Head Gold Sovereign
Amended George IV design - highly sought-after on today's secondary market
The second Sovereign struck by The Royal Mint during the reign of George IV who was on the throne from 1820 until his death in 1830. Following an argument, Benedetto Pistrucci’s portrayal of St George slaying the dragon, which had dominated the Sovereign since 1817, was dropped and the first ever ‘Shield’ design by Johann Baptiste Merlen appeared on the reverse between 1825 and 1830 – this design was to dominate the British classic for the next 40 years.
