The UK’s 1970 Proof Coin Collection
An official nine-piece set featuring the last ever pre-decimal coins
Marking a milestone year in numismatic history prior to decimalisation on the 15th February 1971, the UK’s 1970 Proof Coin Collection includes eight official coins in total, each struck by The Royal Mint with polished dies using specially prepared blanks to the most immaculate Proof quality plus, the original commemorative medal. Still one of the most sought-after collector items of Queen Elizabeth II’s seventy year reign, as the final official set of the pre-decimal era, the coins range from the Half Crown to the Sixpence and carry the all-important 1970 year date as well as the UK’s first official coinage portrait of the monarch by sculptor Mary Gillick on the obverse. None of them entered general circulation so securing this coveted collection is the only way to own these historic issues. Sustained levels of secondary market demand are expected to increase further this year when the nation commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sovereign’s birth but only strictly limited numbers are now available to own at The Jubilee Mint on a first-come first-served basis. All housed in the original Presentation Folder with information Booklet, providing key facts on each coin.
